Partners: Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Bangladesh) - The Project Co-lead (supervised by Dr. N.M. Golam Zakaria at the Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (NAME) department at BUET, and Kabir Steel Limited (Bangladesh) - the Project's Industrial Partner.

To better understand the relationship between ship recycling practices, their hazards, and the safety and well-being of the people who work in ship dismantling/recycling facilities in Bangladesh.

The contract was signed on 13th March 2020.

Discussion on Conducting HAZOP sessions in Ship Recycling Yards

After the project started on 1st April 2021, it was difficult to perform the Project Initiation setup and administrative activities as a result of the second surge of the covid pandemic in Bangladesh. So, the activities were delayed until the month of July. During this time, online discussions were carried out and research papers were studied based on the findings of ship recycling practices across Bangladesh and other ship recycling nations.

One of the key aspects of this research project is to carry out Hazard and Operability (HAZOP sessions) across multiple ship recycling yards in Bangladesh to identify the potential occupational and environmental hazards involving this industry. So, the 2 research assistants chalked out an outline based on the research paper studies and guidelines from the project's stakeholders the co-lead (Dr. Zakaria) and the co-lead coordinator (Dr. Zobair). These outlines were presented and jointly discussed as a part of the first quarterly project meeting with project lead stakeholders (Dr. Arun and coordinator Dr. Hannan.
