2nd National Workshop on Ship Recycling held at Chattogram



On the 18th of March 2023, the 2nd National Workshop on Current Ship Recycling Practices in Bangladesh: Challenges to Ratify Hong Kong Convention (HKC) and Future Opportunities took place at the Well Park Hotel in Chattogram, the ship recycling hub of Bangladesh. The Chief Guest of the event was the Honorable Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Industries, Mr. Protap Chandra Biswas. Prominent guests and stakeholders from the Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recyclers Association (BSBRA), Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), International Classification Societies, Employees from several Ship Recycling Facilities and counterparts of Safety agencies working within the industry were present to grace the occasion.



Participants engaged in interactive open-ended discussions to present and highlight existing industrial practices and commercial aspects involved with ship recycling and the ways forward for adoption to embrace Hong Kong Convention Compliance upon Bangladesh Government's possible Ratification by the end of 2023.


Following the presentations and engaging discussions, a questionnaire-based industrial assessment session took place where 35 participants provided responses to the assessment questionnaire for incorporation into the research purpose for the project.



The Workshop was concluded by a formal certificate-giving ceremony chaired by the Chief Guest followed by lunch. The Workshop eventually resulted in a successful organization of an event highlighting the importance of ship recycling and HKC Ratification for Bangladesh with 60 participants.
